Green-Pal

Focusing on advocacy as a key instrument to build a better, stronger future for children and young people, UNICEF Greece Country Office presents the Green-Pal Chatbot, a tool aiming to help adolescents and youth develop climate action skills, as part of the FunDoo digital skills development tool.

All youth 14-24 years old living in Greece can access the tool for free, by sending the message “Greenpal” via WhatsApp, Viber, Instagram, or Facebook Messenger. Users then interact with a chatbot through a series of five gamified tasks, designed to focus on the impact of climate change and how young people can reduce their carbon footprint and contribute to environmental sustainability.

Specifically, the five tasks, which can be completed at the user’s own pace, are:

• ‘Brush up on your Climate Knowledge’

• ‘What are the Greenhouse gases anyway?’

• ‘Create your Awareness Campaign’

• ‘Meet your Local Heroes’

• ‘What can I do? The Power of Your Voice.'

Once all the above tasks are completed, the user gets a Certificate of Completion. Green-Pal employs an activity-based learning approach through FunDoo, which was launched in Greece in March 2023 and currently has 2450 users.

The content of Green-Pal follows the experiential learning principle where young people learn by doing real-world tasks to learn how to reduce energy consumption, conserve water, and adopt eco-friendly practices in their daily life. It provides short tasks that focus on i) ecological literacy; ii) systems thinking and iii) action competence. Green-Pal was developed by UNICEF Office of Innovation in collaboration with the Association for Learning Design and Education for Sustainable Development (ALDESD) and The American University of Sharjah (AUS). The tool was launched globally during the 28th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP28) in November 2023 in Dubai. Green-Pal is aligned with the Action for Climate Empowerment (ACE) elements adopted by the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

To present Green-Pal, the UNICEF Greece Country Office will organize a series of webinars for educators and on-site workshops for adolescents and youth 14-24 years old. Educators interested in having the tool presented in their schools and classrooms can state their availability through this link.
